First Security Bank, Downtown Boise
On Monday, December 17, 1956, Idaho Governor Robert E. Smylie officially opened the First Security Bank’s brand new $1.5 Million six-story building at Ninth and Idaho Streets in downtown Boise. After the official program of remarks and an invocation, the public was allowed to tour the new building throughout the week. Nearly 5,000 people visited the building that Monday, bank officials reported.
In a unique promotion, the architectural model was filled with bills and coins of various denominations during the open house tours. Throughout the preview week, people could guess the amount of money in the model of the new building to win $750 in prizes.
The building was designed with simple, clean lines as dictated by modern mid-century design by Frederick Hummel of Hummel, Hummel & Jones (a predecessor of Hummel Architects). The design featured marble from Portugal, terrazzo floors, recessed lighting and aluminum railings and ashtrays conveniently located throughout.
The bank has survived with some cosmetic changes and now houses Mountain West Bank, Bacon, and other offices.
