Winters Residence
Today’s #TBT is the Brady Bunch by way of Sun Valley. Completed in November 1963 for Mr. & Mrs. Ben Winters in Sun Valley, Idaho. Excerpt from the AIA Design Award Submission (1966):
“ The clients for this residence desired a vacation house that would be used three or four months per year, both during the summer and winter seasons. They required space for their two children, facilities for occasional guests, and an informal atmosphere for entertaining.
The site the owners selected is a comparatively flat lot in the bottom of a canyon. The position of the house was determined by a magnificent view of a heavily timbered mountain slope on the opposite side of the valley, and a panoramic mountain vista as one looks down toward the mouth of the valley. The house was conceived as a small informal mountain lodge, with the living portion being quite open, an interplay of masses and spaces that define functions, yet flow easily from one area to another.
Native lava stone, slate floors, and exposed wood beams give a rustic atmosphere that is complemented by the more formal appearing smooth wood paneling and painted surfaces. The result is a space that is warm and informal in character.
The bedrooms are separated in the upper level of the house and express a similar feeling with exposed beams and sloping ceilings. The upper bedroom balcony overlooks the living room area and offers a majestic view of the valley.”
As of this writing, the home is still located at 300 Huffman Drive in Ketchum.
