Hummel Earns Recognition for Three Outstanding Projects in Idaho Business Review’s Top Projects 2024

We are thrilled to announce that three of our architecture projects have been selected as recipients of the Top Projects 2024 awards, presented by the Idaho Business Review. This prestigious recognition celebrates excellence in design, innovation, and impact across Idaho’s construction and development landscape.

Each honored project reflects our commitment to creating spaces that inspire and serve the community, aligning with our dedication to quality, sustainability, and forward-thinking design. We extend our gratitude to our clients, collaborators, and dedicated team members, whose efforts made these achievements possible.

Private Building: First Place – Hidden Paradise Medical Camp

Three key areas were focused on for the project at Camp Rainbow Gold: The Med Shack, the amphitheater and the cabin village.

For the Med Shack, Blue Cross of Idaho donated $2.1 million for the construction of the 3,500-square-foot building which is used for the care of campers, who are children battling cancer.

The amphitheater features 200-seats and wheelchair-accessibility, cross-laminated timber benches with custom metal brackets and a hand-painted mural depicting the surrounding mountains and prairie.

Six new cabins were build for the village, each 1,155 square feet, with two bathrooms, two showers, granite countertops, heat and air conditioning and the ability to separate each cabin into two separate cabins.

Many challenges occurred during the project, such as the remote area having limited cell service. That made it hard for crews to coordinate delivery of construction materials. Having been a golf course prior to its new life as a kids’ camp, the property needed its antiquated infrastructure replaced.

Thanks to the generosity of Blue Cross of Idaho, Anderson Construction, Blackrock Homes, Alturas Homes, Core Building Company and James Clyde Homes, discounted and donated work helped to move the project along quickly. Project coordinators also cited the generosity of Chuck Graves, co-owner of McAlvain Companies, who is battling cancer himself.

Private Building: Third Place – Alpine Academy

Alpine Academy in Chubbuck is the second purpose-built school by The Academies Charter School. The organization first built Connor Academy 10 years ago, which provided education for children grades kindergarten through eighth. Alpine Academy will be used for grades sixth through eighth, while Connor will convert to kindergarten through fifth grades. The addition will allow the increase in classes from two classes per grade to three, increasing capacity by 30 students per grade level.

Alpine Academy is a two-story, 32,000-square-foot building able to accommodate 360 students with modern classrooms, teacher and student collaboration spaces, fitness, art, science, music and performance areas. The building incorporates the design principles of access to natural light and ventilation, cost effectiveness and flexibility for each area to become used as teaching space.

Project coordinators had to be mindful of both the budgetary and time constraints.

Private Building: Honorable Mention – Desert Sage Health Center

Nestled amidst Mountain Home’s rural landscape, the new Desert Sage Health Center supports an underserved community through a healthcare hub containing essential medical services under one roof. Designed with the local landscape and community needs at the center, this comprehensive facility houses a pharmacy, medical clinics, behavioral health resources, dentistry services, administrative spaces, and Idaho’s first permanent drive-through clinic.

The modern facility seeks to create healing environments that connect occupants with nature, fostering a sense of calm and comfort by incorporating familiar materials from the surrounding scenery and ample natural light into both patient and staff areas.

Pulling from local scenery, Hummel’s design echoes the surrounding mountains and open plains. Familiar materials such as concrete masonry and warm wood accents add a touch of comfort and familiarity for patients. Instead of a sterile environment, the design establishes a safe, home-like feeling. Because the site location isn’t particularly prominent, a large, central lantern element was incorporated into the lobby, and glass walls allow this lantern to glow. This supports wayfinding and helps to define the entry space.

By providing a spectrum of healthcare services in a comfortable and accessible location, Desert Sage empowers a healthier Mountain Home community to thrive for decades to come.
