ROCK CREEK ELEMENTARY

K12

Twin Falls, Idaho

To provide a solution to rapid enrollment growth in the Magic Valley, the Twin Falls School District passed a bond for two new elementary schools, Rock Creek and Pillar Falls Elementary. Each facility provides custom aspects to best address boundary needs within Twin Falls. Upon completion, Rock Creek houses 650 students in grades K-5, which is comparable to its new counterpart. In the early programming stages of this Northwest school, administrators, faculty and parents voiced the need for a severe needs classroom, and through programming we were able to come up with a solution for the District in the form of a nearly 1,000 sf space.

Specific needs on each of the new elementary school sites elicited the use of a 2-story elementary design. In regards to Rock Creek, site restrictions also needed to be addressed due to the two access points via Federation and Grandview Drive.

Keeping owner dollars in mind, a similar project approach was implemented for both of the new schools. As such, the following items are a list of solutions to district concerns and design components featured in both elementary schools:

DESIGN APPROACH
-Brick material for administrative spaces
-Cement board siding and metal panel materials were used in order to create an appropriate design for residential areas
-Designed classroom pods where each classroom grade is housed and can utilize breakout spaces
-Also provides a level of comfort for students to be grouped with like-aged students

COMMUNITY USE
School district officials, faculty and parents expressed the necessity to have the schools double as community spaces for the Twin Falls Community.

-Auditorium stairs and alternative gathering areas were designed with full media capabilities

SAFETY
The Twin Falls School District requested that we research safety and security trends in elementary designs and the following were design solutions implemented into each of the newest elementary schools.

-One Public Entrance that allows administrative staff to admit each visitor into the building
-Lockdown capabilities 24/7
-Lock down ability from administration and lockdown control of each classroom pod

TECHNOLOGY
The school district also expressed the need for each facility to be leading edge for technology use in the region and also allow for future advancements and implementations down the road.

-Flexibility of furniture and technology components in each classroom
-Designed storage for charging device stations
-Camera and door access control from administration offices for added safety
