Under Construction

Meridian, Idaho

The new Meridian Family YMCA is a 58,500-square foot multi-use/multi-disciplined building that is part of multi-phased project that when built out, will consist of an elementary school (Hillsdale Elementary, completed in 2016, designed by Hummel), YMCA, Aquatics Center, Meridian City Park and possibly a City Library. The overall project, “The Hill” as it is called, started with a donation of the land by the Hill family who farmed this land for generations. When completed, the different partnered agencies, West Ada School District, Treasure Valley YMCA, St. Luke’s and possibly the Meridian Library District, will share different spaces and uses within their conjoined building footprint.

Hummel has been involved with the overall project from the conceptual phase, which will help keep a consistent theme for both the YMCA and Hillsdale Elementary, while staying true to their unique identities. One way this was achieved was by using materials and forms similar from project to project to keep an overall theme, but placement and use of material is different to give the different agencies (YMCA vs. Hillsdale elementary) their own identity.

What makes this project unique is the multi-use aspect, which allows the different types of buildings to work together as one. The unique features of the project space include two access points between the school and the Y, which allows for a multi-use elementary gym, a larger YMCA gym space for sports, a Family Adventure room with multi-story play structure and a Kidzone.
