HILLSDALE ELEMENTARY

K12

Meridian, Idaho

Hillsdale Elementary presented an innovative way to make public dollars go further and breakdown the stereotypical walls for an elementary education facility by combining a school, a recreational center and library all under one roof. The new PreK-5 elementary design is the first phase of a collaborative partnership with the YMCA, the City of Meridian, and Meridian Library District which now houses vital community components in one location.

The Elementary School/YMCA collaboration is the first of its kind west of Omaha, Nebraska and provides a unique opportunity for non-profit and government entities to unite for one project. A key consideration from the West Ada School District was for the educational facility to utilize a two-story design and also have shared spaces for community access. Designing the facility to efficiently share the gym, library, computer labs, classrooms, kitchen, and park and play area proved to be one of the main challenges with programming and design.

In total, the new facility will be around 200,000 square feet and sits on 22 acres of donated land near Amity and Eagle Road. An initial $4 million donation from the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation kick-started the project. The Treasure Valley YMCA will fundraise for the remaining cost of the project. The school is scheduled to open for the 2017 school year while the rest of the facilities opening dates have yet to be determined.
